Abstract (english text)
This paper presents a synthesis of our experience employing Geographic Information System (GIS) for the conservation of some of the most significant Brazilian cultural heritage properties: those located in the municipalities of Porto Seguro and Santa Cruz Cabrália, in the southern region of Bahia state, Brazil. This effort is part of a comprehensive master plan that is being set up by the National Heritage Agency (IPHAN) and the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) addressing the conservation of that heritage through long term planning and management. A large amount and variety of data regarding that heritage has been collected so far, and now they are being organized through GIS resources and methodologies. Namely, the georeferencing in a digital cartographical base of the cultural heritage sites (urban, architectural, archeological, anthropological etc.); the assembling of a digital alphanumerical data base; and, finally, the cartographical base and alphanumerical data base are being associated digitally in order to allow this system for thematic researches, among other possibilities. By these means, we expect both to contribute to move forward the conservation models, resources, and practices adopted by the IPHAN, and to contribute towards the preservation of these properties and the quest for community sustainable development.
